(AP) — The Detroit Lions have agreed to a contract extension with Jahmyr Gibbs, a three-year deal worth up to $75.7 million that his agents say makes him the NFL’s newest highest-paid running back. Athletes First announced the deal Thursday, hours after Gibbs took the field for the first time since the Lions’ training camp started. His agents also noted the new contract includes $51.5 million guaranteed for the Pro Bowler. Two days earlier, Atlanta briefly made Bijan Robinson the NFL’s highest-paid running back. Gibbs rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns last season and had 77 receptions for 616 yards and five more TDs.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Undrafted rookie quarterback Haynes King ran in from the 5 on the final play of the game to lead the Carolina Panthers to a 33-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame game that kicked off the NFL preseason. King was the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year last season at Georgia Tech. He went 21 of 34 for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 39 yards and the winning score. Carson Beck had an impressive debut for Arizona, throwing for 188 yards and a touchdown.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark sat at the dais Thursday night, staring at the stat sheet and reliving the eight turnovers and her two missed free throws with seven seconds left in regulation. Then she took the blame for the stinging 86-84 overtime loss to defending champion Las Vegas. It wasn’t a great night for Clark by any measure. While she scored 20 points, had eight assists and made two go-ahead 3-pointers in the final 4 1/2 minutes of regulation, it was the miscues she rued. The Fever blew a 20-point first-half lead then failed to protect a three-point lead in the final seconds of the fourth quarter and a two-point lead at the end of overtime.

To her, the topic requires a more nuanced conversation, which is why Gauff provided what she called a nuanced answer. Gauff says she agrees with protecting fairness in women's sports. Colts keep 2021 league rushing champ Jonathan Taylor with 2-year, $44 million deal, AP source says
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor has signed a two-year contract extension worth $44 million, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Thursday. The person requested anonymity because the team had not made an official announcement and does not release contract terms. The deal keeps Taylor, the 2021 NFL rushing champ, off next spring's free agent market. Taylor had repeatedly said he wanted to remain with the Colts for the rest of his career. Last week when he reported to training camp, Taylor said he was optimistic a deal would be completed before Indy's Sept. 13 season opener against Baltimore.

UEFA maintains World Cup boycott threat after Gianni Infantino's crisis meeting
European soccer’s governing body says it has retained its threat to boycott FIFA competitions despite FIFA apologizing for its failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup. UEFA reiterated its stance that it had lost confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino. UEFA also says conditions to withdraw its boycott threat have not been met, specifically that “assurances have to be made that such attempts to disfigure the game in this way will never be made again.” FIFA and Infantino tried to present a united front following a high-level summit in Morocco on Wednesday when it announced the president had the full support of those in attendance.
Trump celebrates US Winter Olympians and Paralympians at the White House
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has hosted the U.S. Winter Olympians and Paralympians at the White House, honoring their accomplishments in the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games. Nearly half of Team USA athletes attended the reception in the East Room, along with coaches and staff. Speedskater Jordan Stolz, who placed his gold medal around Trump's neck at a recent rally, was among them. Three hundred U.S. athletes participated in the games and won 57 medals. The U.S. men’s hockey team previously visited Trump in February. Members of the women’s hockey team, who declined an earlier invitation, attended Thursday's celebration.
Olympian Fred Richard surges to the lead at the US men's gymnastics championships
PHOENIX (AP) — Fred Richard has surged to the lead in the U.S. national championship. The 22-year-old, a key member of the 2024 U.S. men's Olympic team that earned bronze in Paris, posted an all-around total of 84.326. Richard raced to the lead after an excellent parallel bar set to start the competition and held it the rest of the way despite receiving a pair of neutral deductions, one for a uniform violation and another for failing to salute the judges properly. Olympian Shane Wiskus is second, followed by 19-year-old Danila Leykin.
