The pregame pomp before the Minnesota Twins played the Philadelphia Phillies featured 26 members of the Hall of Fame emerging from the outfield corn just like the ghost players did in the movie. The first big league game at the site since 2022 was staged in a newly constructed ballpark adjacent to the farmland where the 1989 fantasy was filmed. Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber hit a homer into the cornfield on the third pitch of the game with a capacity crowd of about 8,000.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokounmpo will play homecoming games a week apart in January. The 2026-27 NBA schedule was released Thursday, setting the dates for the two former NBA Finals MVPs to return to face the teams that traded them this summer. Brown, who was dealt from the Celtics to the rival Philadelphia 76ers in a stunning move, will play his first game back in Boston on Jan. 21. Antetokounmpo was sent from Milwaukee to Miami. The Heat will travel to face the Bucks for the first time on Jan. 28.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Top overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza threw a touchdown pass in his first Raiders preseason game on Thursday night. The Arizona Cardinals beat Las Vegas 27-14. Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy winner, led one touchdown drive for the Raiders in four full series and finished 10 of 16 for 97 yards. He became the first top draft pick to throw a touchdown pass in his first preseason game since 2018. The Cardinals decided not to play Carson Beck, who is coping with sore ribs. Each team's starting quarterback played one seriesand both resulted in touchdowns.
Jordan Spieth off to the start he needs with a 65 to share the lead in PGA Tour playoff opener

The defending World Series champions left one inning later with a 5-4 loss to the NL-leading Milwaukee Brewers, who wreaked havoc on Los Angeles’ already beleaguered relief corps with a clutch three-run, five-hit rally. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom has left his start against the Los Angeles Angels after two innings because of right triceps fatigue and will undergo an MRI on Friday. The 38-year-old right-hander, who has been dealing with a left hip and glute injury since the All-Star break, escaped a jam in the first but gave up two runs and five hits during a 32-pitch second. He was replaced by right-hander Peyton Gray to begin the third with the Angels leading 2-0. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one. He needs two strikeouts to become the ninth active pitcher and 94th in major league history to reach 2,000.

Schwarber led off the Field of Dreams game with a homer and then connected for a two-run shot in the fourth inning to spark the Phillies in a 7-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Schwarber said he's looking forward to eventually watching the 1989 movie that was filmed at the site with his two children.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) — Summer McIntosh led all the way in winning the 400-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships. She set a championship record time of 4 minutes, 28.01 seconds on the second night of the international meet. The 19-year-old Canadian bounced back after finishing second in the 200 freestyle on opening night. Meg Harris of Australia earned a surprise win in the women's 100 freestyle. Jack Alexy won the men's 100 free for the U.S. Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan took the men's 400 individual medley, breaking Ryan Lochte's championship mark.
