Two drivers of Mercedes AMG cars file class action lawsuit over an alleged burn hazard in its logo

NEW YORK (AP) — Two drivers of Mercedes AMG cars have filed a class action lawsuit against the luxury car company, saying that the AMG logo on their driver’s seat gets so hot that it literally brands them and causes burns. A court document filed earlier this week in California say plaintiffs Gabriel Lahijani and Karendeep “Karina” Bath allege the front seats of certain Mercedes AMG vehicles have a design defect where the raised metallic AMG logo can be expected to touch a person's upper back, neck, or shoulder. The plaintiffs want Mercedes to compensate them for medical and other costs. Mercedes-Benz couldn’t be reached immediately for comment.

Raiders suspend Kirk Cousins and Maxx Crosby from team drills after practice fight

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins and defensive end Maxx Crosby were suspended from team drills Saturday after a fight during practice the day before. Coach Klint Kubiak says the team has addressed the issue and is moving on. Rookie QB Fernando Mendoza got his first chance to run the starting offense. Mendoza showed promise by throwing three touchdown passes but also had some misfires. The Raiders are preparing for their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. Kubiak hasn't announced how the quarterbacks will be used.

Jorge Messi, Lionel Messi’s father and longtime agent, dies at 68

ROSARIO, Argentina (AP) — Jorge Messi, the father of soccer star and Argentina captain Lionel Messi. has died. He was 68. Messi died Saturday at a hospital in the central Argentina city of Rosario, according to the Rosario-based Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys. Jorge Messi was a chemical technician and worked as a steelworker. He played soccer as a midfielder and reached the youth ranks of Newell’s Old Boys but had to abandon the sport to complete his mandatory military service in Argentina. He played a fundamental role in his third son’s career, serving as his agent and managing his business affairs.

U.S. employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs last month, and Labor Department revisions shaved 103,000 jobs off payrolls in May and June. MIAMI (AP) — Attorneys for social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate argue that the brothers’ high-profile, public lives and other factors constitute special circumstances for their release. They are fighting extradition to the United Kingdom, where the brothers are accused of rape and sex trafficking. The defense attorneys filed a motion for release Friday in Miami federal court. A detention hearing next Thursday will determine whether the Tates should stay in jail or be released during what could be a monthslong extradition process. The Tates have been in federal custody in Miami since their July 18 arrest. The brothers have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

Rubber ducks by the thousands splash into Chicago River for annual Special Olympics fundraiser

CHICAGO (AP) — A deluge of 90,000 rubber ducks poured out of a truck and into the Chicago River. They they bobbed along a stretch of the skyscraper-lined river in the annual Chicago Ducky Derby that raises thousands of dollars for charity. The truck dumped the ducks Thursday from one side of a half-raised bridge. After forming a yellow pool in the river, the ducks floated for around 15 minutes before a winner and runner-up were plucked from the water. The annual event, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois, draws thousands of participants. The winning duck was picked by Becky Cavanagh, the Ducky Derby ambassador and a 13-year Special Olympics athlete.

Kellogg says it's removing artificial dyes from cereals by the end of this year

WK Kellogg said Thursday that it will remove artificial colors from all its cereals by the end of this year. The change comes a year ahead of schedule. Kellogg said last August that it would remove synthetic dyes from its cereals by the end of 2027. But the company said Thursday it has identified fruit- and vegetable-based juices that will give cereals like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks their distinctive colors. The Battle Creek, Michigan-based company said it is also removing BHT, an artificial preservative, from the small number of cereals that still contain it.

Jalapeños linked to a US salmonella outbreak are tracked to a Mexican farm and a distributor

NEW YORK (AP) — Federal officials have traced a multistate salmonella outbreak to jalapeño peppers from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico. At least 345 people in 27 states have fallen ill. Most cases are in Minnesota and Colorado. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that Coast Citrus Distributors brought the peppers into the U.S. The company has recalled the peppers and is notifying customers, including major Mexican food chains. Chipotle and Qdoba have removed jalapeños from their restaurants. The Food and Drug Administration is looking into whether any peppers reached grocery stores. No deaths have been reported, but 36 people have been hospitalized.

UNC's Bill Belichick says son and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is on medical leave. Head coach Bill Belichick announced his son’s absence Thursday morning with the Tar Heels during the second week of preseason camp. Belichick offered no details but said the team hoped to have his son back “as soon as possible.” He also said the defensive staff already works collectively when asked how the team would adjust during his son’s absence. UNC opens the season Aug. 29 against TCU in Dublin, Ireland.
