OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tyrus Hall hit the tiebreaking single in the eighth inning, Ian Korn held Troy to one run in his longest relief appearance of the season and West Virginia beat the Trojans 7-5 in a meeting of teams making their first appearances in the College World Series. Hall hit a two-run double in the second inning and came up in the eighth with two runners on against Zach Crotchfelt. Hall chopped the ball over first base for a two-run lead. Korn was the Division II pitcher of the year at Seton Hill last year. He went six innings.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond publicly called on the Big 12 to suspend Brendan Sorsby after the Texas Tech quarterback won a court order restoring his eligibility. The ruling set aside his ban by the NCAA for gambling on pro and college sports. Drummond wrote the conference a letter on Friday. The office of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton had already warned the Big 12 of potential legal action from Texas Tech as the conference considers its options. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said the notice from Paxton came shortly before a meeting to discuss Sorsby's situation.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A record five SEC teams are in the College World Series and the last six national champions hail from the conference. But it’s not just the same old, same old this year, not with Troy and West Virginia squaring off in Friday’s opener as first-time participants on college baseball’s biggest stage. North Carolina plays Mississippi in the other Bracket 1 game. Play begins in the all-SEC Bracket 2 on Saturday with Oklahoma meeting Alabama and Georgia facing Texas.
UNDATED (AP) — The controversy over gambling in college sports has intensified with Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby's court victory. College players betting on their own teams is widely condemned, but resolving the issue is complex. This week, Nebraska and Georgia urged their coaches not to schedule games with Texas Tech. Meanwhile, the Big 12 is debating its response. The case highlights the challenges of regulating college sports, especially with legal sports gambling widespread and lucrative sponsorships involved. Without legal protections, the NCAA struggles to enforce rules, leaving the future of college sports governance uncertain.
