LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A Taylor County High School student-athlete died Sunday in a reported shooting at a party, leaving the school and community mourning the loss ahead of the upcoming school year.
Kentucky State Sen. Max Wise said in a Facebook post Jaron Johnson died over the weekend. Wise didn't provide details about Johnson's death but described it as a senseless tragedy.
On Monday morning, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said in a news release officers were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of Penick Road on a possible shooting. Once on scene, officers found Johnson dead.
The sheriff's office said a large party was being held at the Lebanon home when a fight broke out, "a gun was pulled and shots were fired." Police said an arrest was made but provided no further details on the suspect or suspects.
Marion County Athletics said Johnson was a member of the Taylor County High School boys basketball team.
Taylor County Schools said Johnson was a beloved student who was preparing to begin his senior year. The district said his loss has deeply affected students, staff and the broader school community.
"As a Cardinal family, we will come together to honor this student's life and support one another through this heartbreaking time," the district said in a Facebook post on Sunday. "We ask that you keep the family in your thoughts and prayers. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all who knew and loved him."
Counselors and support services will be available at Taylor County High School from 9 a.m. to noon each day through Thursday for students, staff and families who need assistance.
School officials asked the community to keep Johnson's family and loved ones in their thoughts during this difficult time.
