New Albany Police new headquarters on Spring Street

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- For the first time in New Albany's history, the police department has its own building to call home.

The department opened the doors to the newly built police headquarters Friday morning.

It is located at the intersection Scribner Drive and West Spring Street. That is across the street from the county building that the department rented space from for the past 30 years.

The new building has been a long-time vision for Police Chief Todd Bailey -- that has now become a reality.

"It's a historic day for New Albany," he said. "The police department, for many years, has been a facility that wasn't sufficient to meet the needs of the community. We provide a public service, and it's important to us to be able to professionally serve the citizens of New Albany."

Bailey said the department had long outgrown the space it was utilizing. The new building includes state-of-the art work spaces that will enhance operations, police training and officer recruitment. Along the walls are pictures and timelines highlighting historic moments in the department's history.

The police chief stood alongside Mayor Jeff Gahan, city officials and members of law enforcement as they celebrated the occasion with a ribbon-cutting.

"So many people contributed so much to this," he said. "It's a labor of love. All of the people on our staff want the best for the people of New Albany. So we wanted to make our best effort to provide the best space so they can have a police department they can be proud of. That's what it's all about. It's all about service."

The city broke ground on the $13 million project in October 2023, and it was completed with no additional cost to taxpayers.
