LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The search for a child reported missing in Frankfort early Friday morning came to a tragic end when the boy was found dead.
The Franklin County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as 9-year-old Gabriel Andrews, according to a news release. He was a student in the Franklin County Schools district.Ā
The search began after 911 operators got a call around 6:30 a.m. about a young boy caught in floodwaters in the area of Hickory Hills, while he was walking to a school bus stop.Ā Police, fire and EMS crews conducted an an extensive search and recovered his body about half-a-mile from where he was last seen around 8:45 a.m.Ā
Andrews was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner's report.Ā
Franklin County Schools Superintendent Mark Kopp said counselors will be available for students and their families.Ā
"We are deeply saddened at this horrific tragedy that claimed the life of one of our students," Kopp said during a news conference Friday morning. "The entire Franklin County school system is praying for the family and friends of those directly affected by the events this morning.Ā
"We are more than a school system: We are a family at Franklin County Schools and we share this loss together. At this time, we are working with support staff at our schools and offering services to our students, faculty and staff."
Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson called on the community to offer support and prayers for the boy's family and friends.Ā
"We encourage our community to offer their support and their prayers not only to the grieving families today, but in the days ahead," Wilkerson said.Ā
The mayor reminded everyone that severe weather threats continue through the weekend, and urged the community to take precautions.Ā
City officials and the Franklin County Coroner's Office are expected to release more information this afternoon.Ā
