Former JCPS teacher sentenced to federal prison on child pornography charges

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A federal jury sentenced a former Louisville high school teacher Thursday on child pornography charges.

Brian Hinds, a 52-year-old former teacher at duPont Manual High School in Louisville, was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in federal prison, followed by a 15-year term of supervised release. This is for three counts of distribution and one count of possession of child pornography.

Hinds was also ordered to pay $26,500 in restitution to the victims of his crimes.

In the criminal complaint in October 2025 from the United States District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, Hinds was accused of sending images or videos on five different occasions to an undercover FBI agent. The videos included sexual performances with boys as young as six years old. According to the complaint, he told the agent he's attracted to young boys and once "messed with" a seven-year-old kid he was babysitting.

After he was picked up by police, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Hinds admitted to both sending and receiving the explicit material. He added he's been looking at child pornography "for the last 30 years," investigators said.

Investigators found 3,326 images and 65 videos of child pornography on his phone. Hinds also admitted to both sending and receiving child sexual abuse material on the Telegram app.

Hinds was a theater teacher at Manual's Youth Performing Arts School. There were no identified victims who are current or former Manual students.

"Distribution of child pornography is always a heinous crime, but Hinds’ actions are particularly disturbing," said U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner. "Outwardly, Hinds appeared to dedicate his life to educating and helping children but under the cloak of darkness and perceived anonymity he was disgustingly betraying his profession and the public's trust by distributing disgusting child sexual abuse materials. Hinds has earned every last minute of his 151 month sentence."

There is no parole in the federal court system.
