LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — Construction on a new Anchorage-Middletown fire station in the Fisherville area is officially in the works.

Officials broke ground Tuesday on the new Station 36, which will be located on Taylorsville Road near South Pope Lick Road.

Spanning roughly 16,000 square feet, the station will be designed with the goal of improving firefighter health and safety. It will feature new living quarters that include a kitchen, day room, offices and fitness spaces, as well as dedicated decontamination and turnout gear storage areas.

Assistant Chief Joe Wolfe said the current AFEMS station that serves Fisherville, which is just down the road, was too small to fully staff their crews. He said that impacted fire protection and their insurance rates.

"We were really kind of stuffed in there," Wolfe said. "We had to remodel it to get minimal accommodation, and so for a while we weren't even able to staff."

AEFMS also said about one-third of the property is in the 100-year floodplain, but no construction is planned there, preserving the area for an open green space.

The $9 million project is expected to be complete in August 2027, marking first new station from Anchorage Fire and EMS since the agency formed in 2018.
