LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/WAVE) — Norton Children's has opened a new center in Louisville for families whose babies are diagnosed with serious medical conditions before birth.
Norton Children's Fetal Care Center officially opened Wednesday and is the first of its kind in Kentucky. It's located at 601 S. Floyd St., directly across from Norton Children's Hospital.
The center puts specialists, testing and support services in one place for families dealing with complex pregnancies. Care can begin after a diagnosis during pregnancy and continue through delivery and after the baby is born.
The team includes maternal-fetal medicine specialists, pediatric specialists, genetic counselors, social workers and nurse navigators.
Families can also meet with several specialists at the same time to discuss a diagnosis and treatment plan. Virtual consultations are available for family members and doctors outside Louisville.
"Our goal is always to keep families in their own communities," said Russell F. Cox, president and CEO, Norton Healthcare and Norton Children’s. "But when a pregnancy requires highly specialized care, we want to create a village of hope for moms and their babies facing the most complex medical cases."
Norton Children's expects the center to serve patients from across Kentucky and the region.
The approximately $1.4 million project was funded through the Norton Children's Hospital Foundation and Norton Healthcare Foundation, along with support from several donors.
Nearly 12% of babies born in Kentucky are premature, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The state's infant mortality rate is also higher than the national average.
"Receiving unexpected news during pregnancy can be overwhelming," Dr. Tamina Singh, a neonatologist and director of the center, said in a news release. "Families need answers, support and a plan. The center brings all of those resources together so parents can focus on what matters most: their baby."
