LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Hoosiers could have less time to vote early in the May primary if a new Indiana bill passes.
An amendment to House Bill 1359 reduces the early voting period from 28 days to 16 days.
Democrats warn the change will make it harder for people to cast their ballots and call the move "disastrous" for voters.
Supporters say it will save money and help local officials manage elections more efficiently.
Gov. Mike Braun expressed doubt about the need for a change.
"In my opinion we are kind of the sweet spot to where we protect the integrity of your vote. I think trying to do anything that tinkers with something that's been working, I'm not sure that's needed," Braun said.
Lawmakers will debate the amendment in the coming weeks as the state prepares for the May primary, a critical election affecting local and statewide races.
