LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky lawmakers approved House Bill 7 Monday, allowing school districts to install cameras on school buses to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped buses.
Rep. David Hale, R-Wellington, said the cameras would help hold drivers accountable and improve student safety. He noted that more than 1,000 stop-arm violations occur daily in Kentucky.
āYou can ask your school bus drivers,ā Hale said. āThey see daily violations that put students at risk.ā
The cameras would be violator-funded, with vendors reimbursed through fines. First-time offenders would face a $300 fine, with repeat violators fined $500.
Rep. Bobby McCool, R-Van Lear, shared a personal story: he was once hit by a truck while exiting a school bus.
āIt did change my life,ā he said. āIām a lucky one. The next one might not be.ā
The House passed HB 7 78-15, sending the bill to the Senate for consideration.
