LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky lawmakers have overridden Gov. Andy Beshear's veto of a bill protecting conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ youths.

House Bill 495 overturns Beshear's previous executive order banning the practice.

Conversion therapy is the controversial practice of using therapy to “convert” LGBTQ+ people to heterosexuality or traditional gender expectations.

Supporters of the bill argue it prohibits discrimination against mental health care professionals and institutions for providing protected counseling services. They say the bill also bans Medicaid payments for hormones or other gender-affirming care.

The Fairness Campaign said the bill opens the door to conversion torture.
