LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville lawmaker wants to help districts, like Jefferson County Public Schools, add more ways for kids to get to school.
Rep. Emily Callaway, R-District 37, filed a bill that would allow districts to use nine-passenger vans to drive students to and from school.
It's an alternative that doesn't require drivers to hold a Commercial Driver's License and would qualify more people for employment.
The bill would require vehicles to be clearly marked as transporting students.
"Anything we can do to just come alongside and facilitate more tools in the toolbelt for our drivers and administrators in the public schools," Callaway said
A similar bill was introduced in the Senate earlier this legislative session by Louisville Sen. David Yates, but it has not moved forward. Callaway's bill passed the House Committee on Education and is on its way to the House floor.
