LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Student protests over the Israel-Hamas war have popped up on an increasing number of college campuses following last week's arrest of more than 100 demonstrators at Columbia University.
The students are calling for universities to separate themselves from any companies that are advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza — and in some cases from Israel itself.
Protests on many campuses have been orchestrated by coalitions of student groups. The groups largely act independently, though students said they’re inspired by peers at other universities.
One of those protests broke out at Indiana University Bloomington on Thursday afternoon.Â
Indiana State Police and campus police began making arrests after an encampment was set up on campus. Protestors were warned the tents were against campus policy, and given a deadline to take them down. They took down a few, but not all.Â
Protestors were zip-tied and handcuffed at Dunn Meadow, and some were dragged away.
Photos and videos posted by the managing editor of the Indiana Daily Student, the university's student newspaper, showed law enforcement carrying shields and batons shoving into a line of protestors linked by their arms and detaining an unknown number of people.
Videos posted to social media appear to show the protest continuing after law enforcement stopped making arrests, with students chanting "we're not done" and "free Palestine."
Supporters of Israel held a counter-rally nearby.Â
At least 33 student protestors were taken away on a bus as officers tore down remaining tents.Â
Fourteen protestors were arrested in Indianapolis Thursday morning near the governor's residence. Police said they had blocked traffic on Meridian Street, upset with Gov. Eric Holcomb's support of Israel. Indianapolis Police cleared the street and posted a list of people they arrested on their social media.
In other parts of the nation, protests at the University of Southern California canceled the school's main stage graduation ceremony after the school had already canceled a commencement speech by the school's pro-Palestinian valedictorian, citing safety concerns. More than 90 arrests were made there Wednesday night.
Protests also broke out Thursday at the University of Texas at Austin, George Washington University, Emerson College, Emory University, Northwestern University, Yale University, the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, the City College of New York, and Michigan State University East Lansing Campus.
Students at Harvard University and New York University protested Wednesday. Monday, protests were held at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.
