LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Councilman Anthony Piagentini took the stand on Monday on trial about whether he should be removed for ethics violations.

Last year, Louisville's Ethics Commission found Piagentini (R-19) committed several violations. At the center of the ethics complaint and ensuing investigation is a deal that sent $40 million of COVID relief money to the Healthcare CEO Council. Piagentini abstained from the final vote because he had accepted a job at CEOc.

The council will decide if Piagentini should lose his council seat. He did not answer any questions.

"Given the false nature of the question I'm advising my client not to answer that question pursuant to the fifth amendment to the United States' constitution," his attorney said.

Piagentini's legal team argued he abstained from the final vote and should be exonerated.

Piagentini needs eight Metro Council votes in his favor to keep his east Jefferson County seat.

This is the third removal trial in Council history.
