LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is in the hospital after experiencing "flu-like symptoms" over the weekend.
McConnell, 83, checked himself into a local hospital for evaluation Monday "in an abundance of caution," according to a spokesperson for the senator's office.
"His prognosis is positive and he is grateful for the excellent care he is receiving," the spokesperson's statement continued. "He is in regular contact with his staff and looks forward to returning to Senate business."
McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, announced last February he would not seek reelection this year and instead retire when his current term ends in January 2027.
The senator has dealt with a series of medical episodes in recent years, including injuries sustained from falls and times when his face briefly froze while he was speaking.
