JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana man faces several years in prison after being charged with cruelty to an animal.

Edward Schuley was brought into court Friday morning in Clark County in handcuffs, shackles and an orange jail-issued jumpsuit. Prosecutors said earlier this month, Schuley was staying at a friend's house and stabbed her cat to death.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the cat was missing, so the homeowner checked security footage and saw Schuley committing the crime.

"The allegation is that Mr. Schuley was staying in the home of a lady who had let him stay there temporarily," Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull said Friday. "She had a cat that was her pet. And the cat was scared of this man and it was hiding behind a couch. And after she left, he reached behind the couch, pulled the cat out, wrapped it up in a blanket and then violently killed the cat at that point and hid it in a trash can."

Schuley is being held on a $20,000 cash only bond. The case is scheduled to go to trial in November.
