NEW ALBANY, In. (WDRB) -- Minions on display in New Albany have caught the attention of millions worldwide.
About 70 of the yellow characters made famous in the movie "Despicable Me," fill a yard on Indiana Avenue, and video of the display has gone viral. The man behind the Minions mania hopes the display will spark a bigger movement.
With 70 bright yellow Minions filling Michael Pourteau's New Albany yard, his holiday display is far from traditional.
"Not that it has a whole lot to do with Christmas, but it brings Christmas cheer," said Pourteau.
But the joy it brings is as classic as it gets. "We're just trying to bring a little Christmas cheer to people. Seems to be working out so far."
The cheery characters crammed near the curb come in all shapes and sizes including two standing 11 feet tall standing right outside the door.
"I just bought one and bought another and then bought another 10. Ended up with 70," said Pourteau.
Pourteau's quick to point out he's not a Minion maniac, but he's sparked Minion mania that extends far from his Indiana Avenue home. On December 3, the Old Town Store in Corydon posted a video of the display on Facebook.
"Someone texted me and said have you seen Facebook? There's like 20,000 views. I'm like really? So I get on there and I'm like yeah there are 20,000 views. Well two hours later there's 40,000," he said.
Since then, the video has been viewed eight million times and growing and shared by more than 95,000 people.
"A buddy of mine said it's in Australia, it's in Germany, it's in Japan. It's everywhere," said Pourteau.
The man behind the decorations says he loves seeing the joy it brings others and hopes the larger than life display sparks a little good along the way.
"There's like 70,000 shares. So maybe each one of those people will do something kind for somebody else," he said.
The smiling Santa stand-ins will stay inflated through Christmas giving plenty of people time to stop by and enjoy the view.
If you want to check out the display for yourself, it's located at 2032 Indiana Ave. in New Albany.
The Minions are on timers and stay inflated until about 11 p.m. every night.
