LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Kentucky cattle producers are asking the Trump administration to reconsider a plan to increase beef imports.
The Kentucky Farm Bureau said the U.S. will allow ground beef products to be imported without an "out of quota" tariff for the next 90 days.
Trump said the move is aimed at lowering grocery costs, with imported beef potentially selling for 25% less than current market prices.
He has not said where the beef will come from or which retailers will sell it at the lower price.
The Kentucky Farm Bureau said it supports efforts to bring down grocery bills but is worried about the impact on cattle producers.
Kentucky Farm Bureau President Eddie Melton said the timing of the plan is especially concerning as farmers work to rebuild their herds.
"President Trump’s plan to significantly increase beef imports comes at a challenging time for Kentucky cattle producers working to rebuild their herds," Melton said in a Kentucky Farm Bureau Facebook post.
The group said relying more heavily on foreign beef could hurt American farmers and have long-term consequences for consumers.
