LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Tick season is in full force in Kentuckiana, so experts are offering precautions you can take to stay safe.
Exposure to ticks can happen all year round, but they tend to be more active during warmer months. They're most commonly found in tall grass and wooded areas but they can also be found in your backyard and on your pets. The best way to prevent getting a tick bite is to use repellent with at least 20% DEET.
You should also try to cover as much skin as possible and be sure to wash up quickly when you come indoors.Â
"As soon as you come in from outside, it's important that you hop in the shower and make sure that you check your whole body for ticks," said Megan Carlisle with UofL Health. "They like to be in areas where they can hide, so making sure that you check under your underarms, your scalp, your hairline as well as even in your belly button."
If you do find a tick, remove it with a pair of tweezers and then clean the area.Â
One of the most common tick-borne illnesses in Kentucky is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Symptoms include rash, fever, muscle aches and joint pain. Tick bites can also cause ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease.
