Waterfront Park a no-fly zone for Bird Scooters

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Bird scooters are buzzing all over the city, but Louisville Metro Public Works issued new rules Monday on where you can and cannot ride them.

You can already see the changes on the Bird app. There's a big red mark over Waterfront Park, meaning it's a no fly-zone for Bird scooters

The new rules are a policy for dock-less vehicles, which include electric bikes and scooters. You can ride on city streets inside the Watterson Expressway with an extension south to Iroquois Park and west to Shawnee Park.

You cannot ride them at Waterfront Park, because there is already a bike rental business there.

The policy also explains why the city could pull the plug on companies like Bird before business really gets rolling. The city will only allow four companies to operate in the city, and they will get a six-month probation period with a limited number of vehicles. Operators will then have to apply for a full-operating permit, which will have to be renewed each year.

A company can operate up to 1,050 vehicles if it meets all the requirements.

Bird released the following statement Monday evening:

"Since Bird first landed in Louisville, we have been thrilled to see its residents and visitors embrace our affordable, reliable transportation option as a way to get around town without having to get in the car. We have been working closely with Louisville Forward on making Bird an integrated part of the city, and we hope to continue cultivating that partnership as city officials implement its framework for e-scooters."

In addition to a license application fee, annual fee, bond and fee for a group parking area, companies will pay $1 per day, per vehicle. The money will fund improvements to the city’s shared mobility infrastructure.
