CORYDON, Ind. (WDRB) -- More than 48 hours after a major water main break in Corydon, crews are still working to find exactly where the leak is coming from.

Town Manager Bruce Cunningham said the water main break happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday, leaving about 600 people without water. Cunningham said by the afternoon, that number was down to around 100 as crews had been able to narrow down the problem spot to a half mile of water line off IN-337 by the Indian Creek Apartments and Rhoads Memorial Pool.

As of noon Thursday, there were 75 households still without water.

"The bad thing is we were losing 1,200 gallons a minute of water and it's going straight down," Cunningham said Tuesday. "No water is coming to the surface. So, we had to call in a leak detection company from Indianapolis. They're here on the scene and trying to help us find that leak underground. Once we find it we'll dig it up and repair it."

In total, there has been a loss of more than 3 million gallons of water, a number that will continue to rise until the leak is found.

Cunningham said Thursday crews have narrowed their search to a 300-foot section of pipe.

The town has set up a spot at the Harrison Township Fire Department where people can pick up bottled water and take a shower. And the YMCA is letting people use its showers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

Anyone who needs help should call the Corydon Town Hall at 812-738-3958.
