The Kentucky Derby Festival is a true gem of Louisville. Hundreds of volunteers produce dozens of events and activities, the biggest, most expensive and most spectacular of which is Thunder Over Louisville.

Thunder is for everybody. The entire community on both sides of the river enjoys it.

Think about what it takes to pull off this world-class event — to secure all those air acts, to have the largest fireworks display in North America right here. It puts Louisville in the national spotlight for all the right reasons. That deserves our continued support.

I would like to encourage every business that can to do the right thing and buy a sponsorship to the festival, big or small. Or make a donation. Our community that supports you needs you to help support the festival.

I would ask two things of our viewers too. When you are making your reservation to watch Thunder at a stadium or a restaurant, or the roof of a museum, ask that business what it gives back to the Derby Festival. Do they donate a portion of their bounty? Do they sponsor any festival events? If they do — great! If they don't, please consider looking for a place that does support the festival instead of one that just takes and keeps.

My other ask: Buy a Derby Festival pin. It's only $7, but it adds up to support a celebration that makes our community shine like no other.

I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my Point of View.
