Earlier this week, I tried to share why many conservatives and the Trump administration do not support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs.
Then, I did more homework so I could share why many liberals and progressives do support DEI initiatives and why they are important to them.
Supporters of DEI believe it promotes fairness and equality. By ensuring diverse voices are heard and providing equal opportunities for everyone, DEI helps dismantle systemic inequalities. Historically, marginalized groups — like women, people of color and those with disabilities — have faced discriminatory barriers to success, and DEI initiatives work to level the playing field.
Some research has shown that diverse teams can bring a wider range of perspectives, ideas and solutions to the table, so supporters believe DEI fosters innovation and creativity — crucial in both business and society.
Supporting DEI means acknowledging past inequities and working toward a future where opportunities are available to all. Two-hundred-and-forty-six years of slavery and a century of Jim Crow laws afterward disproportionately disadvantaged Black Americans and put them generations behind white America. DEI is a mechanism to correct those horrific mistakes made during the early years of this country.
Now, my opinion. In today's politics, most of what we hear comes from extreme people on the right or left, but I would say 80% of Americans live closer to the middle. I don't think DEI should be completely shut down as the ultra conservatives want to do nor do I think we should have the full progressive version of DEI. Something in the middle, something moderate, is probably what most Americans would support.
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my Point of View.
