Kentucky lawmakers passed two bills that will dramatically reshape leadership at Jefferson County Public Schools, putting every school board seat on the ballot and shifting more power to the superintendent.
Board members approved scaled-back cuts after weeks of debate, finalizing JCPS’ central office reduction plan as the district works to close a $188 million budget gap.
The changes come after the JCPS Board of Education voted down the initial plan earlier this month, directing Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood to work with stakeholder groups and return with a revised proposal.
The district on Monday released the minutes from Tuesday’s school board meeting.
The budget issues are listed on the board meeting agenda, saying that there will be an audit to review of the cause of the shortfall and provide recommendations.
JCPS currently has around 330 teacher openings and more than 125 instructional assistant jobs posted on the district’s website.
