This year, three U.S. Navy submariners who died in 1968 when the USS Scorpion was lost at sea were honored.

It's believed to be the only memorial of its kind in the United States.

The Patriots Peace Memorial, located at 3742 River Road, exclusively honors members of the armed forces who lost their lives in the line of duty under conditions other than hostile action.

The brick and glass monument is on Upper River Road next to the Thurman-Hutchins Park.
