Walz phone on sideline

Jeff Walz sneaks a glance at his phone at halftime of a 28-point blowout win over Pittsburgh on Jan. 27, 2019.

ALBANY, N.Y. (WDRB) -- University of Louisville women's basketball coach Jeff Walz has been known to throw out a sharply worded response here and there.

Early Saturday morning, he shot some shade at Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin after the governor Tweeted congratulations to the University of Kentucky men's basketball team for making the Elite Eight Friday night.

Both the Louisville women and Kentucky men tipped off NCAA Sweet 16 matchups after 9:30 on Friday night.

Only UK's 62-58 victory, however, caught Bevin's attention.

And that caught Walz's attention. Early Saturday morning, Walz responded to the lack of good word from the governor with a Tweet of his own.

Louisville's women will face No. 2 ranked Connecticut on Sunday at noon, before Kentucky takes on Auburn Sunday at 2:20 p.m.

The Louisville women will be seeking their second straight trip to the Final Four. Walz took note that the governor Tweeted congratulations to the UK men during its NCAA Tournament gams a year ago, but not to the Louisville women upon making the Final Four.

"I was just trying to be helpful," Walz said Saturday. "I mean, you know, it's our second year in a row. We went to a Final Four last year, and I'm not sure he knew there was a women's basketball team at Louisville or in the state. He was tweeting at Kentucky men for advancing, and I didn't say anything last year, and that's fine. But I thought, you know what, these young women are pretty impressive, and I think as our governor, if you're going to tweet at a men's basketball team at any school, you should at least have someone hopefully letting you know that, hey, there are women that play, too, and you've got a pretty good program at Louisville that advanced to the Sweet 16."

Bevin did acknowledge the Cardinals' win Saturday afternoon, just after noon, quote-Tweeting a post by U of L president Neeli Bendapudi.
