LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart announced Monday that women's basketball coach Kyra Elzy has been relieved of her duties after four seasons with an overall record of 57-59.
Elzy took over the program when Matthew Mitchell resigned for health reasons. She had a pair of strong seasons behind one of the top players in the women's game, Rhyne Howard, and won the 2022 Southeastern Conference Tournament.
But the Wildcats followed that up with a first-round upset loss in the NCAA Tournament and went 12-18 in 2022-23, including just 2-14 in the SEC, before finishing 12-20 in the season just ended and 4-12 in the SEC.
Elzy, who as a player earned a pair of national championships at Tennessee, also served eight seasons on the Kentucky staff as assistant coach (2008-09 and 2009-10) and associate head coach (2010-12 and 2016-20).
"I appreciate Kyra for her efforts at Kentucky, on and off the court, and wish her and her family the best in the future," Barnhart said.
Barnhart said the school will conduct a national search for her replacement.
