LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A major upgrade is coming to L&N Stadium thanks to a $2 million gift from longtime University of Louisville supporters Isac and Carrie Roths.
The University of Louisville Athletic Association board Tuesday approved a project to modernize the stadium's lighting system, a move that will be funded in large part by the Roths' 10-year commitment.
The lighting upgrades will replace much of the original system installed when the stadium opened in 1998. Only the east-side lights were updated during a 2010 expansion. Now, the entire venue will be brought in line with Power 4 college football standards thanks to an LED-based system that's expected to improve visibility, safety and the in-game atmosphere.

The interactive lighting system will also allow for more advanced visual effects during games and events, enhancing the overall fan experience.
"sac and Carrie Roths continue to demonstrate extraordinary leadership through their investment in the future of Louisville Athletics,” U of L Athletic Director Josh Heird said. “This gift allows us to advance a fan-facing project that will significantly elevate the game-day environment and provide our student-athletes with a first-class home field experience.”
Heird added that facility upgrades like these are more important than ever in college athletics.
“Facilities matter in today's college football landscape,” he said. “Upgrading our lighting enhances the energy and atmosphere of a game day and ensures that the fan experience at L&N Cardinal Stadium reflects the level of excellence our program represents.”
The Roths have previously contributed to several key athletics projects at Louisville, including the Thornton's Academic Center of Excellence, Denny Crum Hall, and both the 2010 and 2018 stadium expansions.
The lighting enhancements are expected to be completed ahead of the 2026–27 football season.
