NEW ALBANY, In. (WDRB) -- Plastic bags are getting a new life as mats for the homeless!
WDRB's Keith Kaiser lends a helping hand at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in New Albany (OLPH).
About a year ago, the Weaving God's Blessing Ministry at OLPH in New Albany started getting together to create the mats.
They make plarn (plastic yarn) out of plastic bags and weave it on large looms.
They have sessions on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and on the second and fourth Mondays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Normally, just the ladies of the church do all the work, but this summer they have recruited help!
They invited middle school students from all the Catholic Churches in the area to get service project credit. The Providence High School Volleyball Team also helps out.
They learned firsthand how a simple gesture of love can go a long way.
This quickly became one of their favorite service site of the summer.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church is located at 1752 Scheller Lane in New Albany.
