LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Being in the middle of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it's important to get screened and take preventative measures.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the five-year survival rate is 99%.

Dr. Jeffrey B. Hargis from Norton Cancer Institute visited WDRB Mornings on Thursday to talk more about what to look for and what measures to take.

Hargis said you should talk to your doctor about mammograms and what to look for between the ages of 40 and 45. While it's important to talk to your doctor, it's also important to stay vigilant at home.

"When all of us are bathing and dressing, just pay attention," Hargis said. "If you feel something — and it's really applicable to the whole world of oncology — you need to seek care immediately."

Mammograms are recommended once a year between the ages of 45 and 55. After that, they're recommended every other year.
