Planting perennials and keeping them blooming all summer long

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Perennial plants are the backbone of nearly every flower garden. Unlike annual plants that have to be purchased and planted each spring, perennials keep coming back year after year.

Brownsboro Hardware and Paint owner Jim Lehrer explains that most perennial flowers easy and come in a variety of colors and textures. Just follow directions on the pot, when you plant. But keeping the flowers blooming is a bigger problem for some gardeners.

Lehrer says the key to keeping the blooms all summer is to feed the plants. He says flowers are fed at the nursery and store. But when people get them home and in the ground, they only give the plants water. They are basically starving and need nutrients. He suggests options like Preen, Miracle Gro, Scotts and locally-made Monty's Plant Food.
