LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For 140 years, The Filson Historical Society has been dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the significant history and culture of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley.
WDRB's Keith Kaiser explores the African American History Initiative during Black History Month.
They serve the public through historic collections of original manuscripts, letters, diaries, photographs, architectural records, rare imprints, books, maps, newspapers, textiles, portraits, and other three dimensional items.
Launched publicly in 2023, the African American History Initiative (AAHI) allows the Filson Historical Society to work alongside institutional and community partners to more fully collect, preserve, and share the significant stories of Black history and culture in this region.
The AAHI is a permanent component of the Filson’s Department of Collections and Research.
This long-term effort expands Filson collections, educational programs, and relationships.
Showcasing materials and perspectives on Black businesses, artists, entertainers, architects, educators, churches, families, and more.
The African American History Initiative helps publicize the meaningful stories entrusted to the Filson.
