LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) --  Bone density loss is a major health risk associated with inactivity and aging. Decrease in bone density results in bones that are thin, weak and easily fractured. Health and well being expert, Carlos Rivas, says that exercise is an excellent way to increase bone density.

New bone growth is stimulated when you engage in exercises that put stress on your bones. Studies show those who engage in regular exercise maintained or increased their bone density, whereas those who do not exercise lose bone density.

Exercise Routine:

1. dead lift: 2-3 sets of 5-8 repetitions

2. jump rope: 2-3 sets of 60 seconds

3. boxing: 2-3 sets of 60 seconds; jabbing, hooks, and power punches

Common strategies used to increase bone density include increasing daily intake of calcium and vitamin D, either through diet modification, supplements, exercise and medication.

If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, it is important to check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program.
