LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local summer program is helping to introduce refugee and immigrant students to life in America.
Catholic Charities' six-week summer learning program is being held at Spalding University, in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools.
Participating students will have English classes in the morning, followed by some fun activities in the afternoon from community partners like the Louisville Fire Department and LouCity Football Club.
The program is designed for newly-arrived refugee and immigrant students who have had some disruptions to their learning before coming to the U.S.
"We really just want them to enjoy being a kid, since a lot of times they've had a lot of challenges and barriers they've faced prior to coming in," Kait Evans, with Catholic Charities, said. "We want them to, again, be kids."
JCPS provides the students with transportation, breakfast and lunch.
