LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A former Louisville police chief landed a new job in western New York.

On Monday, the mayor of Buffalo named Erika Shields as the city's new police commissioner. Shields will lead the department starting in May, pending a confirmation vote by the Buffalo Common Council.

She became chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department in January 2021 following the death of Breonna Taylor and the months of demonstrations that followed.

Shields resigned from Louisville in 2023 as Mayor Craig Greenberg began his term and has been working in the private sector.

She came to Louisville from Atlanta, where she also resigned from her post after the police shooting of Rayshard Brooks in 2020.
