Louisville parking day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some parking spots in downtown Louisville were converted to pop-up parks.

The one-day initiative Sept. 19 sponsored by the city of Louisville called Park(ing) Day along Main Street (from Interstate 65 to 9th Street) and 4th Street (from Main to Broadway).

According to the city's website, Park(ing) Day is "a global public, participatory project where people across the world temporarily repurpose curbside parking spaces for one day and convert them into public parks and social spaces to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people."

The first Park(ing) Day was in San Francisco in 2005 and is now celebrated in cities across the world.

The idea appeared to be a hit with folks like Kate Poehlein who helped lead the efforts for a temporary space for her group.

"A place where just a car was sitting before can now be a place where 20 people sit and have lunch together or gather and talk and have a conversation," she said.

Everyone was welcome to participate, but first had to  complete a form on the city's website. Once approved, participants were in charge of bringing their own furnishings and materials for the space, as well as breaking everything down afterwards.

Park(ing) Day was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. Sept. 19.
