LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — As excitement builds ahead of Derby week, thousands of bright yellow rubber ducks took over the Ohio River Saturday for a race with a purpose.

More than 37,000 ducks were released along the downtown waterfront during the annual Ken-Ducky Derby, creating a colorful spectacle as they floated toward the finish line.

The event supports Harbor House of Louisville, an organization focused on empowering people with disabilities and their families through programs and services.

Participants purchased ducks for a chance to win prizes, including a top prize of up to $1 million. Organizers offered options to buy a single duck for $5 or bundles of 30 for $100.

By the end of the event, more than $139,000 was raised to support Harbor House’s mission.

Organizers say the fundraiser continues to grow each year, combining fun and philanthropy as the city counts down to the Kentucky Derby.
