LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Members of a shrinking group known as "The Greatest Generation" were honored Saturday with a memorable day in the skies.

Honor Flight Bluegrass commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The B-25 bomber Miss Mitchell -- that was in service in Africa and Italy -- gave veterans an afternoon flight from Bowman Field.

The plane was also available for tours before the flight.

Veterans we spoke with say it was an afternoon of pride -- but it was also emotional.

Of the 16 million men and women who served in World War II, only about 60,000 veterans are still alive.

"I was surprised at at the turnout here today," said veteran Ed Greaves. "They were very enthusiastic, and I appreciated it. It's the least I could do is come out here and honor three of my buddies that didn't make it back."
