LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Louisville Zoo is getting a little cuddlier!
Two koalas, Chuckles and Myalla, have arrived and are settling into their new home.
Chuckles is a 10-year-old male, and Myalla is a 6-year-old female. The pair made their way from the West Coast on a journey nicknamed Operation Boomerang, which took a lot of planning and organizing behind the scenes. UPS logistics experts at Worldport were in charge of getting the koalas to Louisville safely.
"It's making sure that you have the right temperature-controlled climates for them, making sure you got the caretakers for them, we had a professional master on the aircraft with them as well, we had eucalyptus on standby for when they were hungry and ready to eat," Barry Bragton, UPS Worldport president, said. "We took special care of our special guests."
The zoo’s director said the koalas are currently acclimating to their new environment.
For now, Chuckles and Myalla will be housed separately, ensuring they get the proper care and space they need.
This is a breeding pair, and the zoo's director said he hopes to welcome a baby koala in the near future.
Stay tuned, these cuddly newcomers are ready to charm Louisville. Visitors will soon be able to see them in their new habitats at the foot of Glacier Run.
