Groundbreaking for play area at St. Joseph Children's Home

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- St. Joseph Children’s Home held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for a new play and wellness complex.

The new play area will be located on its campus at 2823 Frankfort Ave.

It will span more than 163,000 square feet, and is designed to accommodate kids of all ages and abilities. It will also feature amenities like a walking trail, splash pad and amphitheater area.

It's part of a $4 million renovation project to modernize the campus while improving the social development and emotional wellness of the kids who live there.

"The kids that live here get to leave our campus less and less, so we are bringing the fun to them so that they have safety," said Suzy Hillebrand, the chief advancement officer for St. Joseph Children's Home.

"A lot of our kids will have challenges going off campus and feeling safe in a public playground or public area," she said. "This gives them the opportunity to still get to play, get to have fun and heal while they get to have that fun."

The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2026.
