LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The countdown to the Kentucky Derby is on and so is the rush to get to Louisville.
Airlines are ramping up service into Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, adding 24 routes to handle the surge of Derby-bound travelers. The move comes as tens of thousands prepare to descend on the city for the iconic "Run for the Roses."
Flights are increasing from major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City — while several cities are getting special nonstop service just for Derby weekend. That includes West Palm Beach, Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Austin and Santa Ana.
The travel surge is expected to peak between April 29 and May 1, when around 35,000 passengers will pass through the airport.
With more flights, more visitors and more buzz, Louisville is gearing up for one of its busiest and most high-profile weeks of the year.
