LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Volunteers gathered Thursday to kick off the 100-day countdown to the 152nd Kentucky Derby.
Kosair for Kids volunteers spent Thursday revamping Derby hats in preparation for the Hats On for Healing auction that happens from 5:30-7:30 p.m. March 12 at The Olmstead off Frankfort Avenue.
More than 300 hats, fascinators and men's hats will be auctioned off to benefit the Kosair for Kids Child Abuse Prevention Fund.
"It's just really incredible to be able to buy your hat for Derby, which you're going to pay for anyway, and make sure that the money — instead of going into some general fund — makes its way back to kids who actually really need it," volunteer Kendra Weyhrauch said.
Many of the same volunteers Thursday were at local hotels and airports after Derby, collecting gently-used hats from visitors heading home after the big weekend.
