LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local florist hit the streets Wednesday morning in Louisville, giving hundreds of people sunflowers and a reason to smile.

Nanz & Kraft Florists gave two sunflowers to every person they came across. One flower they could keep for themselves and the other was to give to someone else.

"I am very happy about it," said Anthony Springate Jr., who works downtown and received flowers Wednesday. "I am at work at the PNC Tower right now, and it is just really nice to come outside and get some sunflowers. I really appreciate them. Now, my day is all brightened, and it's just another great day to be in downtown Louisville."

The flower shop has been participating in the nationwide movement for the past eight years. The goal is to spread happiness and joy throughout the work week.

"I think it is great. Everybody is so surprised," said David Kraft, president of Nanz & Kraft. "A lot of people are real happy, and some people have someone in their family that is sick, and they start crying because they are going to drive straight to their house and give them flowers. It's very touching.

"The impact of giving or receiving flowers is powerful and memorable. It can turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary on."

Nanz & Kraft handed out nearly 600 flowers below the PNC Tower in downtown Louisville and at Baptist Milestone East in St. Matthews.

"I was seeing people walk by and I was like 'That's cute! I want a flower,'" said Michel'le Melton, who stopped by to say hello. "It's beautiful. I am happy for it. I am all about positivity and good vibe nation. So, Dunkin coffee, sunflowers, good food, why not? It's a wonderful Wednesday now!"

"Petal It Forward" was started by a nonprofit called the Society of American Florists as a way to spread positivity and "highlight the emotional benefits of receiving flowers."

"It's happy, and you always like to be happy, so I am happy now!," said Amye Lewis, who got a flower at Baptist Milestone East.

SAF said 88% of Americans say giving flowers makes them feel happy, while 80% said receiving flowers makes them feel happy, according to a survey of more than 2,500 Americans across the country. The survey also showed 76% of Americans agreed that their moods are improved by having flowers in their homes or offices.
