LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two people, including an 18-year-old and a juvenile, are facing charges after vandalism Wednesday at the Miracle League of Louisville facilities inside Fern Creek Park.
David Chestnut, 18, was arrested Thursday on charges of first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal trespassing. A juvenile was also charged, and police are still looking for a third suspect.
The arrests come less than 48 hours after extensive graffiti was discovered Wednesday morning across the property. Blue spray paint covered much of the Miracle League complex, including signs bearing the organization's name and recognition for donors who helped make the facility possible.
According to an arrest citation, Chestnut and the other suspects were seen entering Fern Creek Park around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, after the park had closed. Surveillance video showed the group spray-painting a garbage can before vandalizing other areas of the park.
Police said more than $1,000 in damage was caused by graffiti on park signs, buildings, concrete surfaces and a bench. The suspects were seen leaving the park around 5:20 a.m.
Investigators believe those involved may also be connected to vandalism at Fern Creek High School.
Louisville Parks and Recreation Chief Park Ranger James Brown led the investigation, with assistance from Louisville Metro Police officers and Jefferson County Public Schools police officers.
"Our public parks belong to every person in Louisville, and The Miracle League uses the space at Fern Creek Park to make sports accessible and fun for everyone," said Mayor Craig Greenberg in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing while police search for the third suspect.
