LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Two candidates for Clark County sheriff gave their pitches to Indiana voters at a forum Tuesday night ahead of the primary election.

Two of the four candidates for sheriff — Democrat Ed Byers and Republican Kenny Kavanaugh — attended the forum at The Carriage House in Jeffersonville, Indiana from 4:45-6:30 pm.

They answered questions from community members about their plans for the position and discussed their focus areas.

Byers spent 31 years in federal law enforcement and said he is focused on rooting out corruption.

Kavanaugh spent more than 30 years with the Jeffersonville Police Department, including 10 years as chief.

Both candidates were asked how they would restore trust and prevent fraud after former Clark County Sheriff Jamie Noel was sentenced to prison for stealing from taxpayers.

Kavanaugh said he would increase financial oversight by making audits more transparent.

"I will go through all audits," he said. "All audits will be able to be presented and shared with state board of accounts or whatever vendor service that the state board of accounts assigns."

Byers said he would implement both internal audits and independent outside reviews.

"Not only will we do a monthly audit, internally, of the commissary fund, we will also contract with an accounting firm to do a yearly audit from them," he said.

Incumbent Republican Scottie Maples and Democratic candidate Tim Deeringer did not attend the event.

Indiana’s primary election is set for Tuesday, May 5.
