MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WDRB/AP) -- A massive highway pileup being blamed on whiteout conditions has left three people dead and more than 20 injured in northwestern Indiana.
The accident occurred Thursday afternoon near Michigan City between the 35.5 - 36.5 mile markers on I-94 eastbound.
Indiana State Police officials say more than 40 vehicles were involved, including more than a dozen tractor-trailers. Some passenger vehicles were sandwiched in the wreckage.
ISP personnel are currently working to reunite family members who were transported from the scene.
All eastbound lanes of I-94 will be closed until further notice, as ISP crash investigators reconstruct the scene.
Michigan City Police is providing a bus to serve as a warming station for first responders.
