LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 81.
Holsclaw, who was first elected as county clerk in 1998, last won reelection in November 2022. She was one of the longest-serving clerks in the state and one of the longest-serving Republicans elected to office in Jefferson County.
Holsclaw died peacefully surrounded by family, Ashley Tinius, a spokesperson for the clerk's office, said in a news release Wednesday.
"For over two decades, Bobbie served the citizens of Jefferson County with integrity and honor," Tinius said. "Throughout her distinguished career, Bobbie made lasting contributions through her work at the Clerk’s Office, leaving an indelible mark on this community with her many accomplishments. As a public servant, Bobbie leaves behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and integrity.
"Encouraging her team to embody the values of the Jefferson County Clerk's Office, Ms. Holsclaw instilled a mission-driven approach among all staff members. The mission, emphasizing Value, Integrity, and Performance, was embraced by every employee."
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said Holsclaw will be remembered as a "committed public servant" for Louisville.
"Our thoughts are with Bobbie’s family, as we mourn the loss of a dedicated Louisvillian who devoted her life to serving our city," he said in a social media post Wednesday. "May her memory be a blessing."
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell called Holsclaw's leadership "effective," praising her "drive for excellence" and service to Jefferson County.
"For nearly 30 years, Bobbie's effective leadership made local government accessible, reliable and responsible for all Jefferson County residents. Bobbie's drive for excellence touched everything she did, and we all greatly benefited from her nationally-recognized service," McConnell's statement continued. "Time and time again, Bobbie earned the trust of her constituents, and she upheld the integrity and dignity of her office each and every day. The qualities that made her an exceptional public servant also made her a remarkable friend. As Elaine and I cherish the warm memories of Bobbie, we extend our condolences to her family and all of her colleagues and friends."
Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said Holsclaw leaves behind an "admiral legacy of public service."
"Many Louisvillians have never known a county clerk other than Bobbie Holsclaw. Her leadership made our elections free, fair and secure to so many," Coleman said in a statement. "Bobbie leaves behind an admirable legacy of public service for which the people of Jefferson County can be grateful. Our prayers are with Bobbie's loved ones and her colleagues."
Kentucky Sen. David Yates, former Louisville Metro Council president and member, said Holsclaw's efforts helped modernize the clerk's office and expand access to public services.
"I am saddened to learn of the passing of Jefferson County Clerk Bobbie Holsclaw. For nearly three decades, Clerk Holsclaw served the people of Jefferson County. Her early efforts to modernize the clerk's office and expand access to public services that helped shape the foundation of what many residents rely on today," Yates said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "I recognize and respect her longstanding commitment to public service. I extend my sincere condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time who will remain in my thoughts and prayers."
Tinius said a new county clerk will be appointed. More information on the transition will come soon, she said.
