LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A 34-year-old man died while in custody at Louisville Metro Corrections on Sunday morning.
Maj. Jason Logdson, a spokesman for Metro Corrections, said officers were alerted by an alarm around 3:30 a.m. that a box containing Narcan had been opened in the inmate housing area.
Officers found Richard Graham unresponsive from a possible overdose. Metro EMS was unable to revive him and he was pronounced deceased just before 4:15 a.m.
An internal investigation is underway.
“Loss of life is tragic and something that we never want to see happen," Jerrry Collins, the director of Metro Corrections, said. "The staff at Metro Corrections are going to keep working every day to combat contraband entering our facility, as well as find new innovative ways to assist our population with substance use disorder.”
American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky released a statement on Sunday after Graham died.Â
"While there hasn’t been a death in the facility for nearly 18 months, any death in government custody must be met with a demand for investments in community-based healthcare services, greater transparency, and more accountability," Amber Duke, executive director of ACLU Kentucky, said.Â
